Many Nordic people have a strong bond with nature and that is the reason why Scandinavian wedding very often takes place at countryside. This bond with nature doesn’t mean that they deny urban lifestyle or modern high tech living, but despite all of these kinds of contemporary amenities they feel themselves good at quiet country side and love to make day trips on weekends to some forests. Typical modern northerner’s walk in the forest, basket and knife for collecting wild mushrooms and berries in one hand and ultimate model of iPhone with app to determinate all the forest eatable products in other hand.
This is the fact that most popular season for Scandinavian weddings is summer, which is also very understandable as summer is the only time of the year in Northern Europe when it is possible to make some outdoor parties without freezing to death. Nordic summers are short and the weather is capricious so you never know exactly if it is going to rain or be sunny. It means that weather on your wedding day in Nordic countries is like a lottery.
When arranging Nordic country style wedding with a touch of traditional, it is good to use some modern, chic and witty additional theme by clever way. Good idea is to add some carefully selected vintage goods and keep all additional decorations in the same color range.
One very good example is that lovely Estonian wedding, what take a place last summer in small Estonian island, called Muhu. Everything there is so right – perfect rural location in many centuries old farm house, all textiles from bridal outfit to table linens are white or some shade of gray, only few but decorous and fully fitting with theme accessories as vintage style turquoise car and bridal bouquet – nothing too little, nothing too much. It’s very Nordic to add some intensive color spot as turquoise to wedding decoration where the main background is largely white or mixed white and gray.
General spirit of Nordic weddings is little bit melancholic and longing, as that is well presented on these wedding photos too, taken by my favorite Estonian photographer, Stina Kase (she is working internationally too!). It’s seems like a lot of different gray filters and effects are used but the fact is – these kind of natural lights and colors are very true and typical to Nordic nature moods.
How to set Nordic style wedding table with some turquoise accent?
There are some very simple rules and if you keep these in mind, you hardly can go wrong.
First – use lot of white, recommended 100% linen or another natural material, table linens like a canvas for whole table setting. If you think that fully white background is too boring for your party and you prefer to use some color like turquoise, please choose not very bright tone of turquoise but little bit muted. Still keep it mind that for getting Nordic style table setting is necessary to mix this turquoise with lot of white or gray elements, as white flowers or gray linen napkins.
Don’t over-decorate. Choose rather two or three seasonal and locally run wild flowers and plants for flower arrangements and avoid any imitations as much you can.
High quality of table setting elements are ineluctable. Better invest a little bit more for some linen napkins, which are usable for many years later for reminding your classy wedding party, than disposable cheap paper napkins and plastic.
